Central to Meera Chauda's art is the fusion of images from the Hindu religious tales and European stories she grew up with as a British born Asian girl. Chauda creates hybrid characters belonging to two different stories: part Alice in Wonderland/Hanuman the monkey god; or part Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz/Kali the destroyer. These characters inhabit their own stories, suggested by sequences of images. The artist explores states of confusion and irony, and is intrigued by opposites, contradictions, trickery and the journeys these characters take. Her work process involves enlarging and reducing photographs and collaging them together.
A graduate of Winchester School of Art, Meera Chauda (b.1972) has exhibited widely in the U.K., including the Girl exhibition, The New Art Gallery, Walsall (2000). She also has extensive experience as a workshop leader in contemporary art gallery settings.
